Karuta is a Japanese Card Game inscribed with pictures or folk tale writing that are used for playing both Western and Japanese Card Games. This karuta is called "Uta Karuta", or Poem Cards, and popular with both cildren and adults. Favorite at New Year's festivities !! The deck is divided into reading cards(writing) and grabbing cards(with pictues corresponding to their folk tales). Each reading cards is inscribed with a different poem from a popular folk tale. On the reading cards, the poems are wrriten. To play Uta Karuta, Grabbing cards are layed out face up. One player, the game's judge, picks up a Reading card and starts reading its text. The other players try to recognize the poem and grab the corresponding Grabbing card before opponents do. The player with the most cards at the end wins. Needless to say, that play is the one who knows the poems by heart the best, often recognizing them after only one or two syllabes are read. |
